What are the Worst Guns to Use for Defending Your Home?

As most people know, there are many different guns out there that are designed for specific purposes in mind.  Hunting, self-defense, target or skeet shooting or mounting an offensive against an enemy with a hail of gunfire.  However, while all guns are deadly weapons, not all of them are ideal to use in a home-defense situation for a number of different reasons.  Let’s take a look at some types of firearms that may not be as practical or effective as you may think.

Surplus Weapons

One of the worst types of weapons to use in a home-defense scenario are those purchased from military surplus stores.  While I’m sure a lot of you may disagree with this claim, I want to bring up a couple of concerns to think about.  First, for the average home owner who doesn’t have a lot of experience with weapons or shopping around for used or older weapons, this may be a problem.  Not only that, but a lot of military surplus products are those that are not the best to begin with or are outdated.

Knowing what to look for, as well as having an intimate knowledge about some of the weapons for sale can create more problems in the long run.   Second, the idea of purchasing a used weapon comes with inherent disadvantages as well, mainly that you don’t know what you’re getting.  Remember, that you want to know that you have a reliable, safe and easy to use weapon on the spot when you’re awakened in the middle of the night by an intruder.

Bolt Hunting Rifles

Hunting rifles, by design, are intended to shoot targets at long distances.  They are also cumbersome in the sense that they generally have long barrels.  You also have to take time to cock and load the weapon.  All of these characteristics can prove to be disadvantageous in a home-defense situation where you don’t have a lot of room to maneuver, time to take aim, cock, load and fire the weapon.  Remember that speed and time is of the essence during these types of situations, and going for the long gun may not be the best option at the time.

Tiny Guns

Little guns are almost laughable in terms of their practicality as well as their effectiveness.  While they are cute, sometimes fashionable, and can pack a deadly punch, many are also notoriously unreliable.  They can jam easily, some require odd-caliber bullets, and they are not as accurate as standard weapons.  They are also notoriously under powered, which means that you need to get up close and personal with a potential lethal threat in order to make good use of this category of firearm.  However, there’s nothing wrong with using a tiny gun as a backup either, but you may want to think twice about using them as your first line of defense.

Long Revolvers

On the opposite end of the spectrum, there are a lot of heavy, unbalanced and long-barreled revolvers that can present similar problems.  Accuracy, balance, loading time and power can all be an issue when shooting in close quarters.  These types of guns are usually intended for medium-range targets and have the heft necessary to offset the recoil experienced from firing.  However, for a quick-draw and aim weapon, they are not the ideal choice for many shooters.

Keep in mind that we’re not trying to tell you what kind of gun that you should or shouldn’t have on hand to defend your property.  Sure, you may want a rifle or semi-automatic gun to deal with an approaching threat at longer distances.  Perhaps a tiny gun is a good idea if you can sneak behind an intruder or confront them face to face without putting yourself in danger.  At the end of the day, only you can decide what kind of weapons you want to have on hand to defend you and your family.  The important thing to remember is that it should be one that is most-effective, reliable and comfortable to use.  Just keep in mind that all guns are not created equally, and you may be better off with a standard handgun due to their design to be effective in close quarters shooting.
