Should I store Nutritional supplements? Which ones? How?

There is nothing wrong with purchasing and storing nutritional supplements, and having access to their benefits can improve everything from mood, energy levels and stamina in addition to giving the body what it needs to perform at its best. However, they should not replace healthy eating and storing prepared nutritious and balanced meals. That being said, consider a few factors that can help you to determine what supplements to focus on obtaining and how to store them.

A lot of recent attention has been given to a range of exotic supplements that help the brain to produce certain chemicals. These range from hormone boosters, pills that will make you think clearly and even ones that promise to cure certain types of cancer. Make sure that you stay away from “fad” products and focus on tried and true supplements that have a proven track record for helping the body.

These include supplements that help the immune system, improve mood and provide nutrition.   Concentrate on collecting supplements that contain all of the daily, essential vitamins and minerals along with a B-complex and vitamin C. Vitamin C is essential for boosting the immune system and helping to detoxify the body. B-complexes are not always found in universal supplements, and they are important to have for promoting the health of the nervous system, functioning of the organs and boosting alertness and energy. Fish oil supplements should also be included as they promote heart and vascular health.

Try and avoid taking a lot of mood-enhancing supplements because they take time to work, and there are no guarantees that they will produce their advertised benefits. They also can cause an array of psychological withdrawal symptoms once you stop taking them. They are fine to use if under the direction of a psychiatrist who can help to evaluate your needs and design a regimen that is based on your unique physiology.   However, taking normal supplements along with eating healthy and getting lots of exercise should offset the majority of psychological maladies that you may encounter when trying to deal with a survival situation.

Aside from giving yourself a well-rounded nutritional boost from supplements, make sure to choose some that will also help to repair, cleanse and detoxify the body. The most powerful and effective are green items that include a mixture of things like seaweed, wheat grass and other plants that are loaded with chlorophyll. Chlorophyll is a powerhouse ingredient that acts as an antioxidant, repairs cells, improves blood flow, mood and overall strength and vitality. They are considered to be super-foods that are chocked full of some of the most important nutrients that your body will ever need.

Once you have all of your basic nutrient needs met through the acquisition of supplements, you can branch out and get specific items as well. For example, you can take calcium pills to nourish your bones or magnesium that helps with bone growth as well as muscle health. Zinc is a fantastic cold and flu remedy. These specific supplements are usually also found in multivitamin products, just at higher doses. Finally, consider giving yourself a dose of vitamin A for better night vision and vitamin D to make up for when you are not able to spend some time in the sun.

Most supplements can be stored in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and keep for more than a year. However, the storage requirements will vary on the type of supplement as well as how it was made. Some supplements need be refrigerated whereas others have a very short shelf life. It is important to look at labels and follow their directions to ensure that you are able to keep them stored in a way that will maximize their potency and longevity.

Finally, with the exception of vitamin C, make sure that you don’t load up on your supplements. Follow dosage instructions and be consistent with taking them every day.
