Crying Wolf and Threats to Our Security
We see time and time again how officials warn of threats that are credible and imminent. Sometimes these warnings produce a deterrent effect while others lead to the capture of suspects before they have a chance to act. However, the vast majority of warnings, alerts and false alarms either go unheeded or happen so much that people don’t take them seriously. This leads to the eternal question of whether or not “crying wolf” can end up causing more harm than good.
