There’s no doubt that it is important to prepare for a nuclear attack, massive natural disaster or any other cataclysmic event. These are the things that threaten to plunge our normal way of life into chaos, and we definitely need to be in a position where we are as self-sufficient as possible. However, by placing an emphasis on the big things, it’s easy to lose sight of the million-and-one little threats that we encounter on a daily basis.
The reality is that most of us have a greater chance of contending with a survival situation from one of these random occurrences before we ever encounter a SHTF situation. Consequently, it’s very important to orient our preparedness efforts to deal with threats that we face in the here and now.
Where You Are
Wherever you are at now, take a look around and think about any possible hazards or threats that may exist. Then, think about how prepared you are to contend with them. Can you flee if necessary? If so, where would you go? What would happen if you needed to shelter in place without warning? Do you have a minimal amount of supplies on hand to tide you over until the dust settles?
Where You are Going
Think along similar lines as you consider where you are going. Consider possible hazards that you may encounter on the way or after you reach your destination. Think about how to minimize vulnerabilities, consider possible escape or alternate routes and places to hunker down if necessary. Whether you will be on the road, at school, the office, shopping or out seeing a movie, you want to try and be at least marginally-aware of threats that may crop up.
Bug Out Bags and Survival Kits
One of the easiest ways to be prepared for the unexpected is to keep a bug out bag or survival kit handy in locations where you spend most of your time. This includes places like your home, office, school or vehicle. Consider what kind of supplies you will need if you get stranded, trapped or are forced to head for the hills in order to escape danger.
While many people have at least one bug out bag or survival kit at home, it’s really easy to forget that they do us little good when we’re away. Consequently, having some extra supplies and gear on hand at all times will give you an extra layer of security if and when the unexpected strikes.
Take some time to think about how an extra pair of good walking shoes, some clothing, water, food, medicine and other basic essentials can be worth their weight in gold if you ever get caught up in a crisis while away from home. You will quickly realize how these simple steps can give you options when you would otherwise end up empty-handed, and these resources may be just what you need to get you from point A to B safely.
These are just a couple of tips to help you to start focusing on being prepared to contend with survival situations in the here and now. However, since everyone’s circumstances and needs are unique, it’s also important to think about other little things that you can do to improve your overall level of security as well. At the end of the day, taking small steps like these can provide you with resources and options that can put you at a distinct advantage in the midst of a crisis, and that’s what preparedness is all about.
